FAQs
MORE INFO FOR VOLUNTEERS
No prior experience is required! While motorsport knowledge and event experience are helpful, they’re not essential. We provide comprehensive training for all roles, including safety briefings and role-specific instruction. What we value most is enthusiasm, a positive attitude, and willingness to be part of the team. Whether you’re a motorsport veteran or complete newcomer, there’s a perfect volunteer role for you, and our experienced team leaders will provide all the guidance and support you need throughout the event.
See “What training and support is provided to volunteers?” below for more information.”
Most volunteer roles are open to anyone 16 years and older, with parental consent required for under-18s. However, trackside marshal positions require volunteers to be 18 or older due to safety considerations and insurance requirements. There’s no upper age limit – we welcome volunteers of all ages and value the wisdom and experience that older volunteers bring to our team. We’ll match you with a role that suits your abilities and interests, regardless of your age.
We provide comprehensive pre-event training including mandatory safety briefings, role-specific instruction, equipment familiarisation, and emergency response protocols. On race day, experienced team leaders are assigned to each area to provide ongoing guidance and support. You’ll receive clear instructions, regular check-ins, and immediate assistance with any problems or questions. We also conduct post-event debriefs to gather feedback and recognise outstanding contributions, ensuring every volunteer feels valued and prepared for their role.
he main commitment is race day on Saturday November 29 from around 9am-5pm. We also have an optional setup day on Friday November 28 starting at 1pm for those who can help with track preparation. Most volunteers find the race day experience so rewarding that they want to get more involved!
There are positions available for varying fitness levels and mobility requirements. Most volunteer roles at the hillclimb require you to work outdoors in alpine conditions, so a basic level of physical ability is needed, however each role will have different requirements, e.g. set-up roles may be more physically demanding, while work on the registration desk is more stationary. If you have any physical or sensory considerations, please let us know in the “Additional Information” section above and we’d be happy to work with you to find a role that best suits.
We’ll cover everything within the Briefing Session and provide you with a written copy in advance of the day. To give you an idea: Coronet Peak’s alpine environment means weather can change quickly, so come prepared for all conditions. Bring warm layers including a waterproof jacket, fleece or jumper, and beanie, as temperatures can drop significantly with altitude and wind. Don’t forget sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are essential) as UV levels are intense at elevation. Pack a comfortable folding chair or cushion since there may be periods of waiting between activities. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes with good grip for potentially uneven terrain. Meals are provided, but your own water bottle and extra snacks are recommended. Don’t forget any personal medications! Coming prepared will ensure you stay comfortable and can focus on enjoying your volunteer experience regardless of our sometimes ever-changing mountain conditions.
What do you get?
Our volunteers enjoy getting up close and personal to amazing drivers and a premier motorsport event in Queenstown – surely one of the most beautiful hillclimbs in the world, right? As we are a free community event, run by a non-profit car club, we can’t promise you the world, but we can promise maximum vibes and the unique opportunity to be part of an amazingly passionate team!
We feel our volunteers are the real heroes of the hillclimb, so we do work extra hard to make sure you get the most out of the event. Plus you can’t beat front row seats! Don’t worry, we do provide some tangible rewards too: food, goodies, prizes (this year we’re working on a big one!), and the all-important thank you and recognition at the After Party.
